County schools name top principal

Scott Rhodes, principal of East Henderson High School, has been selected as the 2015 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year for the Henderson County public schools.Rhodes was selected by his peers for his commitment and dedication to the students and leadership in service of East Henderson High School. Human Resources Director John Bryant made the announcement last week to EHHS students and staff. Mr. Rhodes will serve as the 2015 HCPS Principal of the Year from January 2015 until December 2015.Rhodes, who has been with the Henderson County Public Schools since 1992, became principal of East Henderson High School in July 2013. He served as principal of Flat Rock Middle School from 2009-2013, assistant principal of North Henderson High School from 2007-2009, and physical education teacher from 1992-2007. He holds a masters degree from Gardner-Webb University and a B.A. in physical education from Western Carolina University.   Read Story »

'Great Nurses' program recognizes Pardee nurse

April Monnich, clinical coordinator of PATHS (Psychiatric and Addictions Therapeutic Healing Services), was recognized as one of the Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina.Monnich was selected by her peers for her continued excellence in patient care and commitment to the nursing profession. She received her award at a black tie celebration event on Oct. 18, in Greensboro. Monnich was one of 11 nurses from the UNC Health Care system to receive this recognition. The Great 100 Nurses program annually recognizes 100 North Carolina nurses who demonstrate excellence in practice and commitment to their profession.   Read Story »

LOCAL BRIEFS: Etowah High, Veterans Day, music

Etowah High dedicates historic marker ETOWAH — Graduates, friends and supporters dedicated an Etowah High School Historic Marker on Oct. 25 at Etowah Elementary School. Home of the Etowah Indians from 1928 to 1960, Etowah High School received students from feeder schools Big Willow, Blantyre, Boylston, Etowah, Hopewell, Horse Shoe, Oak Forest, Pleasant Grove, Rymer and Yale.Etowah Elementary Principal Mike Thorpe welcomed guests. The Etowah Elementary School Chorus, led by Director Sallie Free, sang a medley of songs. The guest speaker was the Rev. Eade Anderson, who attended Etowah High School in the 1930s. Master of Ceremony was Richard Brown, a member of the Etowah High School Class of '58. Brown collected memories from former students about their many happy memories of the old high school.School Board member Rick Wood, chairman of the Henderson County Education History Initiative, spoke about the purpose of the marker.This was the 10th historical marker dedication in the Education History Initiative's series to mark and preserve the history of schools in Henderson County.The Etowah High School Marker & Celebration Committee was made of Etowah High School graduates Alvin and Patsy Bates Gilbert, Janice Greer Sumner, Wanda Sumner Love and Dorothy Dalton Brown. Co-chairs were Jeans Wells Huggins and Wanda Kay Strickland Peters. Blue Ridge Ringers set Christmas shows The Blue Ridge Ringers, a community handbell ensemble, will perform several Christmas concerts in Hendersonville and Brevard.Organized in September 1995, the 5-octave ensemble rings under the direction of Robert Currier of Brevard. All of the concerts are free and open to the public.The concert schedule is:• Saturday, Nov.15: Food Matters Market, US 64, Brevard, 1 p.m.• Sunday, Dec. 7: Concert with the Hendersonville Community Band, Blue Ridge Conference Hall, BRCC, 3 p.m.• Tuesday, Dec. 9: Transylvania County Public Library, noon.• Friday, Dec. 12: Henderson County Public Library, Kaplan Auditorium, 3 p.m.• Sunday, Dec. 21: First Presbyterian Church, Hendersonville, North Grove Street and U.S. 64, 4 p.m. Pianist to perform at public library Pianist David Troy Francis will perform a free concert on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the Kaplan Auditorium at the Henderson County Library. Francis is a recording pianist for the films "The Pursuit of Happyness," "Elegy" and "Fame!" Fletcher to honor veterans on Nov. 8 FLETCHER — Ken Rash of the U.S. Marine Corps will be guest speaker for a Veterans Day Salute at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Fletcher Town Hall, 300 Old Cane Creek Road. The event will also include a flag presentation by Cub Scout Pack 602, music by the West Henderson High School Band and breakfast after the ceremony sponsored by United Federal Credit Union of Fletcher. Elks Hoop Shoot is set for Dec. 13 The 2015 Elks Hoop Shoot free-throw contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Hendersonville Middle School gym. Registration will be held from 9 to 9:45 a.m.The Hoop Shoot is open to boys and girls in 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 age groups with eligibility based on the child's age on April 1, 2015. The winner in each group will receive a plaque and T-shirt and will advance to the regional competition in Hickory in January. There is no charge to compete. Swing Band plays benefit on Nov. 8 The Civitan Club of Hendersonville is sponsoring a benefit concert by the 17-piece Hendersonville Swing Band at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Hendersonville High School auditorium. Tickets for the concert are available for a donation of $10 and may be obtained from any Civitan Club member and from the Henderson County Visitors Center. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the concert.Proceeds from the concert fund college scholarships for Henderson County High School seniors and to support the Special Olympics and other local events. Salvation Army sees rise in need The Salvation Army received applications for Angel Tree gifts, food, toys, clothing and other items and it appears that requests for assistance are up by at least 10 percent."In this period of economic uncertainty, our income just can't meet the growing needs," Maj. Darvin Carpenter said. "But we need to care for our neighbors right here in this area who face a most difficult Christmas season, struggling even to meet their most basic necessities. I'm confident our faithful friends and those new supporters who see the need will share generously and won't let them down."The familiar Red Kettles will appear on the streets in late November until Christmas Eve. Donations can be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Authorities identify body found on Green River

The man who was found dead on the banks of the the Green River near the Peter Guice Bridge last week has been identified. He was reported missing and termed armed and dangerous by the Greensboro Police Department on Monday, though Henderson County sheriff's investigators do not suspect foul play in his death.   Read Story »
