County grew by 9 percent, Hendersonville population tops 15,000

 Henderson County's population grew by 9 percent, to 116,210, while Hendersonville topped 15,000 for the first time, new census numbers show.

Overall the region’s growth trends are in line with state and national trends, the Land of Sky Regional Council said. Urban areas are growing faster, many rural areas are losing population. Fifty counties out of the state's 100 counties lost population in past decade.

Buncombe grew by 13 percent to 269,452, adding 31,134 people, while the Asheville count was 94,589. Madison's census count was 21,193, up 429. Polk and Transylvania counties lost population. Transylvania, at 32,986, lost 104 people over the past decade. The city of Brevard is at 7,744 while Rosman had a population of 701. Polk dropped from 20,510 to 19,328, a decrease of 1,182 people.

Wake County officially passed Mecklenburg to become the most populous county in North Carolina, while the five largest counties in North Carolina in 2020 were also the five largest in 2010:

  • Mecklenburg: 1,115,482
  • Guilford: 541,299
  • Forsyth: 382,590
  • Cumberland: 334,728
