Parks & Rec Department's activity bags program wins national honor

Henderson County's effort to provide children virtual playtime when pandemic restrictions shut down the usual summer programs has won national recognition.

County Commissioner David Hill read a letter from the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials announcing the award for the Parks and Recreation Department's activity bags program for children. The association said the creative and innovative program "sets an example we can all learn from."

The bags including activities including Create Your Own Rainbow, Grown Your Own Good Luck Clover, Paper Bouquets, Gladiolus Bulbs and Rain Gauge.

"As the board's representative to the Parks and Recreation Board, these people work hard, the staff that we have at the Parks and Recreation Department are an excellent example of people that care about their job, the board cares." The county's parks and recreation programs are "a vital resource to our county."
