Community Band returns to stage with Americana program

The Hendersonville Community Band returns to the stage with an “Americana” program at at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 1, at Blue Ridge Conference Hall at BRCC.

Conductor Winfred Franklin and three guest conductors will lead the 65-piece concert band in the performance that also features guest trombonist Bobby Powell as soloist on “Andante and Allegro," led by band member and guest conductor Joe Brashier. Brashier will also play with the trombone section performing the well-known “Sweet Trombone Rag.” As well as soloing, Powell, who is conductor of Upstate Winds, will conduct the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Kenny Bierschenk, composer and music director of Cincinnati’s Westside Community Band, will conduct his arrangement of patriotic songs “Let Freedom Ring.”
An additional spotlighted group will be the HCB Brass Quintet, comprised of Stephen Ray and Bill Shank, trumpet, Don Wauchope, French horn, Paul Draper, trombone, and Dick Sieber, tuba, playing the ever-popular “That’s a Plenty” accompanied by the full band.
Rounding out the program are “An American Elegy” and “Columbine High School Alma Mater," “Soaring with John Williams,” in celebration of his 90th birthday, “West Side Story,” commemorating the 70th birthday of the Broadway production, and “The Thunderer” (Sousa).
