How many taxpayers appealed new property values?

Just under 4,000 property owners have filed appeals of new values assigned to their homes, businesses or land in this year's reappraisal — 5.7 percent of the total parcels on the tax rolls — Henderson County Tax Administrator Darlene Burgess told city and county leaders on Tuesday.

After the 2023 revaluation, the tax office mailed out 69,422 notices of value, resulting so far in 3,961 appeals — 216 of which are scheduled to be heard by county Board of Equalization & Review. The rest were informal appeals handled by the tax office staff. Of the informal appeals, 93 went up, 1,330 (33.6 percent) went down and 2,391 (60.4 percent) remained the same. The deadline to file appeals to be heard by the board of E&R is 5 p.m. Monday, May 15.

Burgess reported on the status of the 2023 reappraisal at the quarterly meeting of the Local Government Committee for Cooperative Action, which is made up of city and county leaders.
