High school seniors may apply for service academy appointments

U.S. Rep. Chuck Edwards on the Fourth of July weekend reminded high school seniors that they may apply to be nominated for to join one of the U.S. service academies. 



There are five service academies: the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Military Academy at West Point, the United States Merchant Marine Academy and the United States Coast Guard Academy. Nominations are required for all the academies except for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. 

As a member of Congress, Edwards may nominate high school seniors who live in the 11th Congressional District.

Those interested in learning more or applying to one of the service academies may visit edwards.house.gov/services/military-academy-nominations.

Applicants must submit:

  • Current photo
  • High school transcript
  • American College Testing Program (ACT) results and/or College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) results
  • Resume of extracurricular activities
  • An essay stating why you want to attend a service academy (500 words or less)
  • Minimum of three letters of recommendation
