Treadway, Munoz star in NC Stage comedy

Flat Rock Playhouse veterans Scott Treadway and Neela Muñoz are featured in The Understudy, which opened Feb. 13 at NC Stage in downtown Asheville. In The Understudy, playwright Theresa Rebeck takes the audience behind the scenes to explore the ridiculousness and brilliance of the business of theatre, film and acting.
The cast also includes Swannanoa native Matt Lutz, who starred on
The Spitfire Grill at the Flat Rock Playhouse and appeared recently in the original Broadway cast of the musical Bonnie and Clyde.
Treadway plays Harry, who just landed an acting job understudying in a runaway Broadway hit production of Franz Kafka's undiscovered masterpiece. He's understudy to a mid-level action movie star (Lutz) whose most recent movie grossed $67 million in its opening weekend. And while they're slugging it out during the first put-in rehearsal about the nobility (or lack thereof) of each other's status in the profession, the stage manager, Roxanne (Neela Muñoz), has had enough!
Treadway was last seen at NC Stage in the hit production of
The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (abridged). Muñoz, along with dozens of roles at Flat Rock Playhouse, directed the NC Stage production of Boeing Boeing, which starred Treadway and NC Stage Artistic Director Charlie Flynn-McIver.
Charlie Flynn-McIver directs; he is the co-founder of North Carolina Stage Company with his wife, Angie Flynn-McIver.
The Understudy plays at NC Stage through March 10. Performances are Wednesdays through Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets are $16 to $28, based on day of the week.
