Woman dies in fall from overlook on Blue Ridge Parkway

A 61-year-old South Carolina woman died from injuries she suffered after falling from an overlook off the Blue Ridge Parkway, the National Park Service said.

Dispatchers received a call at 12:15 p.m. Saturday that a female had fallen down a steep cliff at Glassmine Falls Overlook at milepost 361. Park service law enforcement rangers who reached the  scene determined the victim, Nancy Sampson, of Greer, had succumbed to injuries from her fall.

Rescuers found Sampson some 150 feet below the overlook.  Her body was recovered by first responders from Reems Creek Fire Department, with assistance from Mt. Mitchell State Park rangers and a volunteer with the Trauma Intervention Program of Western North Carolina. No additional details were available on Saturday, the park service said.
