Ecusta Trail groundbreaking set for Oct. 28 (2)

Henderson County officials, the Friends of Ecusta Trail and other supporters are inviting the public to a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of the first six-mile leg of the Ecusta Trail from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 28, at Veterans Healing Farm, 38 Yale Road.

“The beginning of the construction of the Ecusta Trail marks the culmination of efforts by so many who have strived diligently for more than 15 years to reach this point and eventually see it completed and in use,” Henderson County Board of Commissioners Chair Rebecca McCall said. “This proves that a dream can become a reality.”

The Ecusta Trail, when fully completed, will be a 19.4-mile multi-use greenway that connects the communities of Henderson County to the city of Brevard. The first six-mile stretch of the trail will start in downtown Hendersonville, go through the town of Laurel Park, and end at Battle Creek off U.S. 64 in Horse Shoe. The second phase in Henderson County, which is in the planning stages, will take the trail to the Transylvania County line.

The event opens with a social hour, vendor visits and opportunity to walk the trail corridor from 10 to 11 a.m. Remarks by people who have pushed the trail from concept to concrete and the groundbreaking take place at 11 a.m. The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public, and all members of the community are encouraged to attend. Participants are advised to wear weather-appropriate clothing and footwear suited for uneven terrain. Lawn chairs are recommended.
