Litter Sweep offers prize for 'unusual trash'

Litter Sweep, the North Carolina Department of Transportation's (NCDOT) annual statewide roadside litter cleanup event, is an opportunity for local government agencies, community leaders, civic and community organizations, businesses, churches, schools, families and individual citizens to demonstrate support for a clean Henderson County and a cleaner North Carolina.

Organizations interested in organizing a cleanup during the April 13-27 sweep are urged to call the local NC DOT office at 828.694.7971 or visit www.ncdot.gov/~littersweep. Volunteer organizations are responsible for choosing a road to pick up. NCDOT provides orange safety vests, gloves, orange bags for general trash and blue bags for recyclables.
During the cleanup have a camera with you and keep an eye out for "unusual" litter. Then, enter the KNCB Unusual Litter Contest by submitting the picture with the entry form. Entry forms are available at www.ncdot.gov/~littersweep. Winning entries are awarded cash prizes of $250 for 1st place, $100 for 2nd place and $50 for 3rd place.
Once the cleanup is complete groups will need to contact NCDOT, to let them know the location and number of bags to be picked up by their crews. It is the responsibility of the group to take the blue recycling bags to the Henderson County Transfer Station to be recycled free of charge.
For more information please call the Litter Sweep hotline at 1.800.331.5864 or visit www.ncdot.gov/~littersweep.
