Mountain Community launches statewide online school

The Mountain Community School, a public charter school serving students across Henderson County since 1999, has announced the launch of Mountain Community Online School, a new statewide, fully remote, tuition-free public charter school for students in grades 4 through 8.

The Mountain Community Online School is now enrolling students statewide for the 2026–2027 academic year.

“This is a thoughtful and strategic expansion of our mission,” said Jeff Morris, executive director of The Mountain Community School. “For more than 25 years, TMCS has built a strong, student-centered learning community grounded in academic excellence and meaningful family partnerships. Mountain Community Online School allows us to extend that same commitment to families across North Carolina who are seeking a flexible, high-quality public school option.”

Morris said families are increasingly looking for structured online learning environments that provide flexibility and accountability while maintaining strong teacher engagement and meaningful connections. Mountain Community Online School is designed to combine the accessibility of online education with the structure and support of a traditional public charter school. Students will receive:

  • Live, teacher-led instruction
  • Personalized academic support
  • A dedicated Success Coach assigned to every student
  • Engaging, project-based learning experiences
  • A safe and connected online school community

School leaders emphasized that the launch of Mountain Community Online School does not replace or alter Mountain Community School’s flagship campus in Hendersonville.

“Our commitment to our current families and to the Henderson County community remains unwavering,” Morris said. “Our campus-based school remains central to who we are. This online school is an addition to our mission, not a replacement. We remain fully invested in strengthening the value and impact of our existing school.”

As a public charter school, MCOS is tuition-free and open to students in grades 4–8 across North Carolina. Enrollment is limited.
