Overnight work at I-26/I-40 starts Tuesday

Overnight closures will take place starting Tuesday on Interstate 26 West at Exit 31B in Asheville as crews perform rehabilitation work on the bridge over I-40.

The closures will take place from approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Tuesday to Friday this week. The work involves jacking up the bridge from its bearing plates to replace the bearings. The bearings hold the bridge components together, enable the bridge to expand and contract as temperatures fluctuate and absorb shock as cars travel over the bridge.

During the closure, motorists traveling on I-26 West attempting to access I-40 West will use the following signed detour route: Take Exit 31-A (Hickory/Biltmore Estate) to merge onto I-40 East. On I-40 East, take Exit 47 for N.C. 191 (West Asheville/Farmers Market). At the red light, turn right onto N.C. 191, then turn right to take the I-40 West ramp.

The work is part of a $3.2 million rehabilitation project involving substructure and surface repairs to lengthen the life of the bridge. The project contractor is American Contracting Services Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana.
