Shepherd receives Sauer Charitable Leadership Award

Thomas R. Shepherd was honored with 2014 Richard C. and Vina L. Sauer Charitable Leadership Award at the annual celebration for the Community Foundation Thursday at Kenmure Country Club.


For the past 21 years, the Sauer Charitable Leadership Award has honored local philanthropists who provide outstanding leadership and make significant charitable contributions to benefit the community.
"The 2014 Sauer Charitable Leadership Award is being presented to an individual who is a lifelong resident of Henderson County," said Recognition Committee Chair Shirley McGee. "He and his family have helped shape the Henderson County community for over 110 years and they have worked to instill the tradition of family service and philanthropy."
Shepherd joins a distinguished list of past Sauer award recipients that includes Frank Ewbank, Kenneth Youngblood, Morris Kaplan, Kermit Edney, William E. "Jamie" Jamison, William "Bill" Stokes Jr., Marcia Caserio, Eleanora Meloun, Tom and Sue Fazio, Frank Byrd, Dr. Colin Thomas, Dot Marlow, Duane and Peggy McKibbin, Jeff Miller, the Dr. Kathleen McGrady family, Robert and Doris Eklund, Teddi Segal, Marian Lowry, Dr. Stuart and Carola Cohn and Mary R. Garrison.

Guest speaker was Jeff Polish, founder and executive director of The Monti, a North Carolina-based nonprofit organization that invites people from the community to share personal stories on stage without the use of notes. Its mission is to create community through the telling of stories.
