City Council makes appointments

Mayor pro tem Ron Stephens replaced Councilman Jerry Smith on the Downtown Advisory Committee after Smith said his teaching schedule made the assignment difficult.
Smith was appointed to the board last year. A social studies teacher at Hendersonville High School, he had worked out an agreement with principal Bobby Wilkins to miss one hour of class a month to attend the meetings, which are held at 9 a.m. on the third Wednesday of the month.
"It's a struggle for me to leave school to get to the meeting," Smith said. "I am not able to make that meeting on a regular basis."
In other appointments, the council:

  • Appointed the Seventh Avenue Advisory Committee as the Board of Directors for the Historic Seventh Avenue District, completing the transition from a nonprofit agency to an arm of the city government.
  • Reappointed Ralph Bastedo, Jo Tyler, and Phillip Allen to the Historic Preservation Commission.
