The Hendersonville Chamber Music series will present the Kontras String Quartet at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at First Congregational Church, 1735 Fifth Avenue West.
The Valentines-theme program "Intimate Letters" features Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 18, #1; Langsamer Satz by Anton Webern; and Leos Janacek's String Quartet No. 2. Tickets are $20 per show or $75 for the four-concert series. Students are admitted free.
The Arts Council of Henderson County will present the "Mentors & Students" exhibits at First Citizens Bank downtown from Feb. 13 through April 10.
Designed to celebrate the importance of art in a child's life, the three exhibitions will feature the work of Henderson County elementary, middle and high school students and their art mentors.
"The Art of Our Children" elementary student exhibition will open with a reception at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, and will close Friday, Feb. 27. The Hendersonville Symphony Children's Choir, under the direction of Kristen Walter, will perform during the opening reception.
The second show will feature Henderson County's art teachers in the sixth annual "Art Teachers Create" exhibit opening Friday, March 6, with a 5:30 p.m. reception and closing Friday, March 20. The mentors' artwork will be for sale.
Secondary students will be featured in the third show of the series, "Artists of Tomorrow," from Friday, March 27, to Friday, April 10. The opening will include the announcement of awards, including a Best of Show cash prize of $150, sponsored and presented by the Art League of Henderson County. Musical and/or theatrical performances by Henderson County students are planned for each of the opening receptions.
Gallery hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. All opening receptions and shows are free and open to the public. The "Mentors & Students" exhibits are sponsored by First Citizens Bank, and the Dr. Minor F. Watts Fund of the Community Foundation of Henderson County. Three Chopt Sandwich Shoppe will sponsor the seventh annual Pancake Breakfast to benefit United Way of Henderson County from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15.
The event will run The breakfast will include pancakes, bacon, home fries, fruit salad, coffee and juice. Tickets are $10 ($5 for children ages 6-12) with all proceeds going to help close out the United Way of Henderson County 2014 Campaign. To-go orders will be accepted.
Those who would like to support the United Way but cannot attend were invited to consider purchasing tickets that will be donated to local shelters. Tickets are available in advance at Three Chopt (103 Third Avenue East) and at the United Way offices (32 Smyth Avenue Suite 100), or at the event.
The Fletcher Parks & Recreation Department will hold its annual Father & Daughter Dances on Saturday, Feb. 7, at Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher.
Although the 6 p.m. event is sold out, tickets are available for the 3:30-5:30 p.m. dance. Each daughter will receive a flower, photo with her dad and
a great memory of a special time together. Tickets are on sale at the new Fletcher Town Hall from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Hendersonville Presbyterian Church will host an Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 18. Special music includes the children's choir singing "Create In Me a Clean Heart" by John Carter, "Softly and Tenderly" played on the hammer dulcimer by JoAnn Nagle accompanied by Bill Nagle on the dobro, and hymns led by Cindy Leonard and Bill Nagle accompanied by Bill Nagle, Andy Morris on the guitar and Gayle Stepp on the piano. The Rev. David Garrison will deliver the sermon. Belinda Winkle will give the children's message. A nursery will be provided. A catered dinner will be served at 5:30. Reservations are required for the dinner by calling 692-3211.
Spring is just around the corner and now is the time to order strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry and asparagus plants to support awards and programs for youth in Henderson County.
All plants are bare root and must be picked up at Henderson Farms, 705 Tracy Grove Rd., Flat Rock, on Saturday, April 11, from noon to 4 p.m. All plants prefer full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Instructions for planting and care comes with the plants. Visit this link for an order form:

Henderson County 4-H Club is seeking books, CDs and DVDs for its Books for Good project to benefit charities. The Cooperative Extension office, across from the ball fields in Jackson Park is a drop off location. Donations may also be dropped off at ACE Hardware and Blackberry Mountain Café. • Tuesday, Feb. 10. Democratic Women, 5:30 p.m., Three-Chopt Restaurant, 103 Third Avenue East. Ronnie Pepper will speak on "A Spoken History of the Black Communities of Henderson County."
• Wednesday, Feb. 11, Henderson County Democratic Party discussion group, 9 a.m., Mike's On Main, 303 N. Main Street.
• Wednesday, February 18, Senior Democrats, noon, bag lunch at 11:30 pm., party headquarters.
