The Hendersonville Middle School girls soccer team defeated Waynesville Middle 5-4 on May 7 to win the Blue Ridge Conference Championship.
This was the third championships in a row for the Bearcat squad, which went 14-1 this year and outscored opponents 89-13.
The championship game was an overtime penalty kick victory.
Karli Simon, Madison Kirby, Maya Gash, Cam Coggins, and Breona Bryant played on defense to prevent Waynesville from having many attacking opportunities. Katie Parce played in goal for the regulation and overtime periods and made some great saves and punts to keep the Bearcats in the tight game. Cam Coggins played in goal for the penalty kick period and made the crucial stops that were needed to win. Martha Smith, Erin Price, Madelyn Ball, and Nikki Schedivy battled with the Waynesville midfielders to control the tempo and pace of the game in the midfield. Anna Yokote, Breona Bryant, and Eden Hawkins kept shooting and pressing on goal to keep the pressure on Waynesville the entire game.
Goals were scored in regulation by Martha Smith on a throw-in off a Waynesville player and by Eden Hawkins off a Martha Smith throw-in. Anna Yokote scored on a PK, Martha Smith scored her second goal on a PK, and Madison Kirby scored the goal of the season with her game winning PK. Coach Smith, Coach Beasley, and Coach Bushe would like to thank 8th graders: Anna Yokote, Breona Bryant, Camryn Coggins, Eden Hawkins, Karli Simon, Madelyn Ball, Martha Smith, Maya Gash, Hamrick Perry, and Makara Lynch and 7th graders: Erin Price, Katie Parce, Madison Kirby, Nikki Schedivy, Celia Donaldson, Yuri Gallardo, Erin Sainsbury, Heidi Reid, India Davis-Boggs, Verenice Gonzalez-Leon, and Riley Selvig for all their hard work this season. The coaches also thank the managers. HMS girls soccer has a record of 43-1 over the last three seasons.
