Targeted enforcement reduces burglaries, sheriff says

Targeted enforcement produced a substantial drop in home and business burglaries in 2015, Sheriff Charlie McDonald says.

“We ended the year 38 percent below our 2012 numbers for breaking and entering,” he said. “We’re proud of that change. I attribute much of the success to our patrol deputies and detectives who are out on the road making a difference every day and every night.”
The sheriff’s office used crime mapping to focus surveillance and enforcement on high crime areas.
In 2015 the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office lowered breaking and entering by 6 percent compared to the 2014 numbers. When crimes such as larceny from motor vehicles, shoplifting, purse snatching and all other larcenies are included, the numbers fall by 12 percent. So-called Part 1 crimes include breaking and entering and larceny plus other serious crimes such as murder, manslaughter, rape, robbery and other offenses that provide a useful barometer in determining an overall view of crime within a jurisdiction. Part 1 crimes dropped 5 percent in the past year and are 33 percent lower than in 2012.
“We are encouraged by the numbers, but our work is never over,” McDonald added in a news relese.
A specific way that residents could prevent theft: Lock your car doors.
“We feel like a broken record, but a large number of our larceny from motor vehicles occur when people leave visible items in their car and fail to lock their doors,” McDonald said. “Locking your vehicle is one of the easiest ways you can lessen your chance of becoming the victim of a crime.”
