Forest closes soggy single-track trails

The N.C. Forest Service has closed all single-track trails in DuPont State Recreational Forest temporarily because recent snow and wet conditions make the trails extremely susceptible to damage. Forest roads and two-track trails such as Triple Falls, High Falls and Hooker Falls trails will remain open.

“We anticipate conditions will improve enough for trail reopenings by Feb. 4, but an assessment will be made at that time,” said Jason Guidry, forest supervisor. “In the meantime, we want to protect the trails from damage so everyone who visits DuPont can enjoy them in the future.”

Forest officials say foot traffic, bicycles and equestrian users could cause erosion and create deep ruts in trails because of the saturated and muddy surfaces.

Visitors to DuPont are asked to pay attention to signage or barricades related to trail closures. Trails will be reopened as soon as possible, with some trails becoming available to users before others. Trails that are not closed may have debris in them or also be muddy, so use the trails at your own risk.
