Holt and Goforth to perform and describe old-time music

David Holt and Josh Goforth will perform on March 30 at Blue Ridge Community College.

David Holt and Josh Goforth will present a concert on March 30 of mountain music in a show that will also feature the versatile musicians’ telling of how “hillbilly music” rose to become a powerful tool of remembrance.

Mountain music is as vibrant today as it was when it began hundreds of years ago across the wide sea. Holt, a four-time Grammy award-winning musician, storyteller and cultural preservationist, and Goforth, the Madison County string instrument virtuoso, bring that story to life through their songs and stories.
For 35 years Holt has been collecting and performing the music of the old time Southern mountaineers. Goforth, a Grammy nominee, is descended from many of the old-timers David learned from in the late 1960s in Lonesome Mountain.
“Josh is one of the finest musicians in North Carolina and is helping bring the music that is his birthright into the 21st century,” Holt says. “Our show is about folk traditions that are exploding with creative energy and fun.”
The concert, presented by the Center for Cultural Preservation, is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Bo Thomas Auditorium on the campus of Blue Ridge Community College. Tickets are $20.
