City rolls out rain barrel program

The City of Hendersonville is rolling out a rain barrel program to encourage water conservation and to help control stormwater runoff from residential lots.
The program is a partnership with the Environmental Sustainability Board of Hendersonville, said Michael Huffman, stormwater quality specialist with the city. Rain Water Solutions of Raleigh will provide the 50-gallon rain barrels to city residents at $68 per barrel, down from the retail price of $129 per barrel. The rain barrels must be ordered through Rain Water Solutions’ website, but they will be delivered to the Garden Jubilee on May 27 and 28. Buyers will pick them up in the parking lot of the Grey Hosiery Mill.
Huffman said the rain barrels come with all parts, but there is some DIY involved. You’ll need a hacksaw to cut the rain gutter to size and the concrete blocks to create a level area on which the rain barrel can rest. Don’t worry. The website includes a five-minute video that explains in detail the installation process.
