Carolina Barbecue Company of Hildebran received the Grand Champion Award at the 2012 Henderson County Boyd BBQ Expo Saturday at Dietz Field at Hendersonville High School.

Owner Dale Duckworth took home the $500 prize from the event, which took in $18,000 for the Henderson County Education Foundation.

Okie-Dokie's Barbecue of Swannanoa, owned by Steve Dunning, snagged the Reserve Grand Champion award of $300 and the Honorable Mention prize of $200 went to Pit Boss Barbecue, owned by Robert Haynes of Hendersonville.

Carolina Barbecue also took the First Place Brisket award, the First Place Ribs award and the First Place Chopped Pork award, $100 each. First Place Chicken award of $100 went to Pit Boss Barbecue.

The festival grows each year, said Don Jones, executive director of the Henderson County Education Foundation. Approximately 5,000 people attended this year's festival, an increase over last year's attendance of 1,250. He said the net proceeds from the event has not been calculated.

"We were lucky the rain held off," he said.

Jones praised T.C. Thompson of Boyd Chevrolet, who directed the event for the auto dealership, and Cam and Les Boyd for their support.
