Participants will plant a red oak in memory of the late Dr. James Volk during the annual Arbor Day celebration at noon Friday, May 3, on Bearcat Loop at Hendersonville Elementary School.
A pediatrician and long-time member of the Four Seasons Rotary, Volk in recent years had coordinated Arbor Day events. His wife, Hendersonville Mayor Barbara Volk, routinely declares Tree City Day in the city, as she will next week.
The public is invited to attend the hour-long ceremony, along with students, Mayor Volk, North Carolina Forest Service personnel, Four Seasons Rotary Club members, the Hendersonville Tree Board and others. Hendersonville Elementary third-graders will sing a song about trees and nature. North Carolina Forest Service Ranger Chad Fierros will present awards from the Arbor Day Foundation to the city as part of the Tree City USA program. Four Seasons Rotary Club has sponsored Arbor Day events since the first one in 1991. Tiffany Ervin, Rotary District 7670 governor elect and a long-time member of Four Seasons Rotary, will officiate. For more information about the Arbor Day celebration, call Arbor Day coordinator Corey Prince at 910-352-4005.
