Campfire Grill reopens with ready-to-reheat takeout menu

The Campfire Grill, the new Flat Rock eatery that had to shut down soon after a strong start, has reopened with a modified menu of ready-to-reheat to-go items plus pulled pork, ribs and brisket.

Starr Teel, owner of Hubba Hubba Smokehouse and founder of Honey & Salt brunch diner on LIttle Rainbow Row, opened the Campfire Grill to local acclaim on late February then was forced to suspend inside dining with the statewide coronavirus stay-at-home order on March 27. Teel and his cooks, managers and servers retooled for takeout orders after that but suspended that to tweak the process.

The staff wanted to study "how do we actually keep people safe" in the food delivery process, "because so many people don't want cook," said Mara Erdman, a co-manager of the grill. Some people may have concerns about taking home prepared by a restaurant. "That extra step (of reheating) kinda gets rid of that."

The menu will chanfge day to day, and available in orders for two. On Friday, the grill offered beef Stroganoff with fresh mushrooms, sauteed in a creamy mushroom sauce, served with egg noodles ($18); woodfired Springer Mountain chicken breasts with roasted potatoes & asparagus ($18); mushroom ravioli (portobello mushrooms served with creamy parmesan sauce ($15); and triple chocolate brownies a la mode. The grill is also offering meat and sides from the Hubba Hubba menu, including pulled pork, pork ribs, brisket and sauage by the half rack or pound, with sides of vinegar slaw, baked beans and potato salad. A tossed salad that feeds two as an entree or four as a side is $10.

"We have kept our entire staff on board but only three are in the front of the House and three are in the back of the house at a time," Erdman said. "We want to be a good thing for Flat Rock and not be a part of problem. We think we have found a good solution to keep them well and well fed."
