Here's a blast from the past.
Veronika Gunter, a former Hendersonville Times-News reporter, wants to replace the late Sen. Martin Nesbitt in the North Carolina Senate.
Gunter, a Democrat, has managed political campaigns for local candidates in Buncombe County for the past 14 years, including the successful campaign of the current mayor, Esther Manheimer.
Last week Asheville City Councilman Gordon Smith endorsed Gunter.
"Veronika Gunter is a woman who can carry forward the legacy of the late Sen. Martin Nesbitt," he said. "Veronika's tenacity, intelligence, charm, and strategic thinking are exactly the characteristics we need to continue the fight for working families in Buncombe County and across North Carolina."

The Buncombe County Democratic Party's Executive Committee will fill the seat on Thursday, April 3, Asheville's Mountain Xpress reported.
Gunter was a Times-News reporter in the mid-1990s and left the newspaper in 1999 to become an editor at Lark Books. She later went into political campaign consulting and human relations management in Asheville.
