The Mountain Chapter of the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association announced its endorsement in the Henderson County sheriff's election.
The chapter endorsed Fletcher Police Chief Erik Summey, who is one of two candidates challenging Sheriff Charlie McDonald in the May 6 Republican primary. State Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Brown is also running for the seat. The winner will face Democrat Marty Katz in the Nov. 4 general election.
The PBA chapter said in a news release that it had conducted a screening of the Republican candidates before endorsing Summey.
"Through an understanding of issues important to our membership and a willingness to be a working partner in our efforts to improve and promote the local law enforcement profession, Erik Summey has earned our support in the primary race," said Mountain Chapter President Brandon McGaha, a sergeant with the Hendersonville Police Department.
