Developer files plans for county's first Spinx gas station plaza

Henderson County will get its first Spinx gas station, convenience store and carwash plaza if developers complete plans they've submitted to the county planning department.

Spinx Co. of Greenville, South Carolina, and landowner Discovery One filed an application for approval of a 6,434-square-foot conveninece store, a 1,182-square-foot car wash and gas/diesel pumps for passenger vehicles and tractor-trailers on the northeast corner of the Fletcher-Mountain Home I-26 interchange. The site plan shows a total of 112 parking spaces on the 4.35-acre site. The plan also includes:

  • Five diesel pump bays for large vehicles
  • Eight fuel pump bays for passenger vehicles
  • Primary access to the site off Asheville Hwy with two driveways
  • Secondary access off Champion Way, which is off Maxwell Drive
  • A drive-through automatic carwash with vacuums

The development would cover 74.3 percent of the industrial-zoned site, which  currently contains a building used for auto sales and repairs. The former XCEL Sports Complex is to the east of the property and Hipps Stone Sales is on the west. The county Technical Review Committee is scheduled to take up the request at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the county office building at 100 N. King St.

Discovery One bought the property in 2018 for $1.8 million. It's valued on the tax books at $1.6 million. The Spinx station would be second major fuel-up and convenience store stop on an I-26 interchange in the county.  Oklahoma-based QuikTrip, which bills itself as “more than a gas station,” plans to put up its first store in Western North Carolina on Upward Road at Ballenger Road.
