Donors salute achievements of children, families

FLAT ROCK — The Children and Family Resource Center celebrated the achievements of young mothers and others who got help from the non-profit agency during the 13th annual Harvest Dinner with the Stars at Kenmure Country Club on Oct. 6.

Mixed in with entertainment by young singers, dancers and musicians, CFRC clients told of how the agency had lifted them out of poverty, helped them attend college or taught them parenting skills.
Stephanie Barbosa became pregnant as a teenager. When her boyfriend proposed, she was joyous.
"Then everything hit us. We didn't have a job, we didn't have money, we didn't have a car and we lived off our parents," she said. "That's when somebody told me about the Children and Family Resource Center adolescent parenting program. When we went to the program, it was amazing. We felt like we were in a family. Everyone treated us right. They helped us find a home, they helped us find a job."
She now works as a hostess and in the spring is going to AB Tech to study to become a radiology technician.
"Children and Family Resource Center has helped me grow as a person, be a better parent to my child and most importantly they've made me not become just another teen parent statistic," she said.
Entertainers included Most Wanted Bluegrass, made up of teen-age musicians from the mountains and S.C. Upstate, the Mills River Elementary School Drama Club, singer Molly Penny, a 9-year-old comic, Clarke MacDonald; pianists Tirzah Baluch and Lauren Freeman, slam poet Shanita Jackson and the band Calculated Error, made up of Isabel Hughes, Nick Haight, Ronnie Monroe, Aaran Osteen and Scott Danielson.
