Homeless man struck on U.S. 64 at I-26 dies of injuries

A man who was seen stumbling around the Orr’s Camp Road area around 7 o'clock Saturday night was struck by a car minutes later on Four Seasons Boulevard at the I-26 interchange and died later after being airlifted to Mission Hospital, the city of Hendersonville said in a news release.

Hendersonville police officers responding to the call about the male stumbling in the roadway were attempting to locate the man when dispatchers received another call that a pedestrian had been hit by a car a couple hundred yards east.

Investigators determined a driver traveling east on U.S. 64 and struck the pedestrian around 7 p.m. Two lanes of U.S. 64 West were temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel to access the injured pedestrian. The man was transported to Pardee Hospital before being flown to Mission Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

It was determined that the pedestrian was intoxicated, and no charges were filed against the driver. The man was homeless and officers were still working on Sunday to make next-of-kin notification, the city's news release said.
