Mail theft suspect arrested in Henderson County

After receiving reports of mail thefts in mid July from residents in the South Rugby Road area of Henderson County, investigators have arrested Wayne Richard Ashton, 29, of Hendersonville.

Ashton has been charged with one count of felony financial card theft, one count of felony financial card fraud and two counts of felony attempt to obtain property by false pretenses. Other charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

Investigators had identified Ashton as a suspect and arrested him after deputies found him sleeping in a vehicle behind a church. Ashton stole credit cards, checks and other items from mailboxes and was able to activate accounts while making numerous purchases throughout Henderson, Buncombe, and Transylvania counties.

Ashton is incarcerated in the Henderson County detention under $24,500 bond.

The United States Postal Inspector is assisting with the investigation.
