Weather cancels Tellico at R&B for second time

For a second time, a Rhythm & Brews show with the band Tellico has been called off.

The threat of heavy rain Thursday night from Hurricane Michael forced the city to call off what had been a makeup for the Asheville-based bluegrass and Americana band, which was slated to headline the May concert that was rained out. A third makeup date was not possible, said downtown development coordinator Lew Holloway.

"We're getting late in the season. We had looked into whether we could postpone it until Friday but it didn't work with enough of our volunteers," he said.

The contract with bands, the staging company and other vendors allows the city to call off the event with advance notice without penalty.

"As long as we call it off ahead of time it keeps us out of trouble in our contract," Holloway said.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood watch through Thursday evening, saying that the hurricane "will increase the potential for heavy rain on the east side of the mountains."

"The threat for heavy rain and flashflooding will be highest during the day on Thursday," the NWS said. "The storm will pass quickly, ending the threat from west to east latetomorrow afternoon and evening." The area could get up to 1 inch of rain overnight Wednesday and up to 2 inches on Thursday. Friday and Saturday should be beautiful, with highs of 70 and 66 respectively and lows of in the 44-46 degree range.
