HHS picks Biden in mock election

Hendersonville High School's student body and its mock Electoral College cast their votes for Joe Biden as the next president.

 The mock election was the culmination of the school's annual symposium organized by the Social Studies Department, which focuses on the presidential election every four years.

The homerooms divided into all 50 states plus Washington, D.C., to cast their electoral votes, with in-person and remote students participating through their homeroom classes. When the homerooms was tallied, the Biden-Harris ticket won 331 electoral college votes compared to 207 for Trump-Pence. The school's Electoral College vote matched the student body's popular vote for Biden.

Congressional candidates Madison Cawthorn and Moe Davis took turns announcing the roll call during Friday's assembly, which was streamed live on YouTube so all students and staff could participate in the annual event, despite COVID-19 capacity restrictions.

History and civics teacher Jerry Smith said the HHS mock elections have made accurate predictions four out of the last five presidential elections, with 2004 being the outlier.
