Hendersonville High School students and faculty mourned the loss of a senior who authorities said was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Thursday morning. Jeremy Dakota Huffstetler, 18, died at the scene of the gunshot wound, sheriff's Maj. Frank Stout said. Deputies were called to a residence about 6:30 a.m. Thursday where the teenager was found. Seniors held a brief memorial for their classmate on Friday morning, and the school sundial, a traditional gathering place, was covered with flowers. Shortly before 9 a.m. four students had gathered around the memorial in the rain. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Ethel Green; his paternal grandmother, Lucille Parton Huffstetler; and his paternal grandfather, William Edward Huffstetler. A native of Vietnam he was adopted by his parents when he was eight months old. He was an honor student and senior at Hendersonville High School where as a lover of music he was an active member of their concert band. He was planning to attend Western Carolina University in the fall. He was a member of Boys and Girls Club in Hendersonville, a member of Stoney Mountain Baptist Church and a honorary Member of the Hendersonville Lions Club. He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Brenda Huffstetler; several aunts and uncles; and his best friend, Jonathan Lewis. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Memorials Scholarship Fund c/o Henderson County Educational Foundation, PO BOX 1267, Hendersonville, NC 28793. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at The Salvation Army with Captain Chris Thornhill officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Fairview. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Church.
