Project 'Sweet Tater' would add 34 jobs paying $59,147/year

A high-tech agricultural company in Mills River is poised to add 34 new jobs paying an average of $59,147 a year after Henderson County commissioners on Wednesday authorized up to $48,809 in economic development incentives over seven years.

The so-called “Project Sweet Tater” would result in a capital investment of $4,775,000 over two years to renovate an existing vacant building, Brent Coston, AgHC’s executive director, told commissioners. The expansion would result in the retention of 35 jobs, plus the creation of the 34 new jobs. The first year’s incentives would be no higher than $5,732, based on the new investment, the number of retained employees and the new jobs.

The company runs “a pretty high tech operation” propagating sweet potato varieties, Coston said. “They are doing field trials out in Mills River in open air with current farmers."
