Charges pending in Parkway fatality

Blue Ridge Parkway law enforcement rangers say charges are pending against the driver of a car that plunged down an embankment after attempting to pass on the parkway, killing a 16-year-old passenger in his car.

Parkway rangers responded to a report of a motor vehicle accident near Milepost 394 at approximately 10:25 p.m. on Saturday. The vehicle, driven by a 21-year-old male, was traveling northbound in a group of four vehicles when it attempted to pass another car in the group. The passing vehicle lost control in a curve, left the roadway and rolled approximately 200 feet down an embankment. The 16-year-old high school student from Cowpens, South Carolina, was thrown from the vehicle and pinned under it. She died of her injuries at the scene. It is believed that speed was a factor.

The Asheville Citizen-Times identified the victim as Macy Broome, a junior at Gaffney High School who had just turned 16.
