Local man injured in triple fatality crash in East Tennessee

A 21-year-old man from Hendersonville was hospitalized in serious condition on Monday night after the pickup truck he was riding in collided head-on with a Ford Focus that was traveling the wrong way on I-40 in East Tennessee, killing three people in the car, multiple news outlets reported.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the Ford Focus driven by a 28-year-old Michigan woman was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the interstate east of Knoxville when it crashed head-on into a Toyota Tundra pickup driven by Isaiah Rathbone, 18, of Penrose, who was also injured. Michael Smithers, the passenger from Hendersonville, was hospitalized in serious condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, WBIR-TV reported.

Those killed in the crash were identified as driver Josey Gale and Kay-Cie Hafer, 28, both of Vassar, Michigan, and Starr Majors, 26, of Otter Lake, Michigan.
