"Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower,
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf,
So Eden sank to grief.
So dawn goes down to day,
Nothing gold can stay."
--Robert Frost

Mr. Browning passed quickly in his home Monday evening, April 20, sitting with his new bride at age 85. Bert loved people, the mountains of western Carolina and was a friend to all who met him.
He was born in downtown Hendersonville on 6th Avenue in 1929 to Sara and Bert Browning, Jr. and drove a milk truck through town regularly at age 14, while younger drivers helped at home during WWII. He earned his pilot’s license as a teenager and graduated ROTC from Hendersonville High School in 1948. He graduated from NC State in ’52 and was directly commissioned as an Army Lieutenant Medic. Bert started his career with Merrill Lynch in Charlotte. He was promoted in ‘67 to their New York headquarters as a manager migrating the paper recordkeeping of the largest U.S. investment firm to computers.
Bert left corporate life and returned to Hendersonville in 1975 when he renovated the building on the NE corner of First & Main. He was instrumental in the federal designation of our Historic Downtown area. This brought the serpentine road design with its planters and benches that fostered the re-birth and added charm to our active business district. The Browning Title insurance agency served on the corner for more than 25 years during a time of tremendous growth in Henderson County.
Bert spent his retirement in Saluda, NC and was woven into the community socially and spiritually. One of the first things he did there was to help stabilize the library. Bert was a joyful and intelligent man, believing that we are all expressions of God. He studied numerous religions, cultures and philosophies. He enjoyed cooking for others and spoke from the heart to encourage and mentor friends of all ages.
He is survived by Dana Feaster Browning, his wife of four months with whom he shared a gentle peace and true love in his final days; his sister Virginia Turner of Hendersonville; three sons: Parker Browning, a tax advisor in Hendersonville; Tom Browning, a software engineer in Bellevue, WA; and Sidney Browning, a financial planner living in Alpharetta, GA with his wife Alia and Bert’s grandchildren, Laila (18) and Benjamin (15).
In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that you mentor a youth, be generous and tell your friends that you love them.
There will be a private family service and Memorial Celebration for those that loved and supported Bert in the coming weeks. Remembrances can be sent to Sidney at sidneybrowning@bellsouth.net

She received her bachelor’s degree from Murray State University and her master’s degree from the University of Louisville. She was employed at the Fletcher Branch of Henderson County Library as a Librarian and was a member of Etowah United Methodist Church.
Linda was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the recipient of a US Army medal: The Commander’s Award for Public Service, for her support of US armed forces, other governmental agencies, and their families while in overseas locations.
Linda was an adventurer. She was avidly curious about the world and was always searching for answers. She loved exploring, taking hikes, canoeing, and scuba diving. Her travels sent her to most of Europe and she followed the journey of Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Ocean.
Linda was known for her inner strength and beautiful spirit. She had a whimsical sense of humor. Her nurturing presence was essential in her years as a social worker, helping countless people in need. Linda was also a dreamer who always had creative ideas. During her employment at the library, she was able to utilize her creativity by leading story hours for the pre-school children. There was nothing she liked more than reading and sharing her crafts with kids in the community. An avid crafter, she had countless projects she was working on, anything from mending her daughter’s dresses to crocheting a toilet seat cover!
Most importantly, she loved her family and friends passionately. She treasured her relationships with her three sisters. She married her soulmate and they created a beautiful life and many memories together over the years. The love they shared brought two daughters, whom Linda loved more than anything. Esther Melissa Bauman was born in Englewood, Colorado, to Charlotte and Cad Turpen on December 2, 1933. The youngest of three, she was predeceased by her parents, her sister Caroline Jones and brother Whitney Turpen. She passed away at peace with the world on April 13 at the age of 81. Divorced from Budrow Bauman after ten years of marriage, Esther had no children, but had five nieces, their children, and many close friends she counted as family.
Esther received an associates degree in education from Ventura College in California in 1960 where she was vice president of Alpha Gamma Sigma, a scholarship society. She went on to earn a bachelors degree in education from University of California at San Fernando 1964 and was a certified teacher. Esther found her calling in social work, however, and worked for the Los Angeles County Welfare Department for 28 years, retiring in 1989. She was a lifelong learner, taking classes at UCLA, then after retiring to North Carolina, at Blue Ridge Community College.
Esther was an intelligent, sardonically funny, beautiful woman who lived life on her own terms. She read widely and was an engaging conversationalist. Esther was an adventurous woman who loved to travel, and enjoyed gambling trips with her friends. She could present a cantankerous front at times, which camouflaged a generous spirit and a deeply spiritual inner life. Her years as a social worker gave her one outlet for her compassion, but we will never know all the people she helped personally over the years with food, clothing, shelter, cash, information, advice, and non-judgmental support. Her beloved dog, Belle, was a constant companion in her first years of retirement, and she cared as much for the welfare of animals as for people in need.
Esther will be interred alongside her brother Whitney and his wife, Ruth, in Denver, Colorado, at a later date. Those wishing to honor her memory could donate to the Manna Foodbank, Prevent Child Abuse North Carolina, the Blue Ridge Humane Society, or purchase artwork from Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, an organization Esther supported that helps disabled artists sell their work.

She leaves behind her precious husband, C. Arthur Dalton, Sr., and two daughters by marriage: Jeannine Burrell of Hendersonville and Deanna (Neil) Brittain of Greensboro, NC; four grandchildren by marriage (who she claimed as her own) Christopher Lynch of Atlantic Beach, NJ; Megan Lynch of Long Beach, CA; Kellie Burrell of Goldsboro, NC; and Ariel Brittain. She is also survived by her first cousin (more like her sister), Jean Owenby Heatherly of Flat Rock, NC; and a dearly loved Uncle (considered the Patriach of the Owenby family), Clifford Owenby of Hendersonville, NC. She leaves behind many beloved friends who became like family; a dear church family; and 4-legged babies.
Carla started her working career at the age of eight setting up bowling pens in her Uncle’s bowling alley in Chimney Rock, NC. She graduated from Edneyville High School as her class valedictorian; then graduated from then Blue Ridge Tech with honors. She worked at the Henderson County Dept of Social Services, the Henderson County Health Dept. and finished her working career in her most loved work place – the Henderson County YMCA , retiring from the YMCA after 25 years of service in 2007.
Carla loved traveling and was blessed by three trips overseas; cross-country of the USA; and many shorter trips. She was constantly reminded of our Heavenly Father in all the beautiful places she saw in her travels and marveled at the blessings of God in allowing her to see so many beautiful places on this earth. Near the end of her life, she made several “bucket-list trips” as long as her health allowed. Her beloved husband, Arthur, family, and many friends helped to make these last trips of her life possible and comfortable.
She was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church and was especially grateful to her Pastor, Bryan Melton, and the countless friends and neighbors who constantly encouraged her, brought food to her home, ran errands, brought flowers, sent cards and visited in the last months of her life.
Carla strongly believed that there was enough hurt and pain in the world to the point that she did not need to add to it if she possibly could refrain from doing so. Kind words and actions were strong endeavors in her life. She tried to live her life, and encouraged others, to live out the fruit of the Spirit as described in Galatians 5:22-23. Mother Teresa was one of Carla’s role models and some of Carla’s favorite quotes of Mother Teresa: “Peace begins with a smile…”; “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless”; “Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of God’s kindness: kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile.”
